'Taliban using villagers as human shields'

Islamabad, May 3: About 2,000 people are held captive in Buner district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in Pakistan, by Taliban militants to use them as human shields if army attacked. This move by Taliban came as the Pakistan army beefed up their campaign to takeover the districts of Buner, Dir and Swat.

Military sources said that more than 100 militants and several soldiers are killed since the battle began on Tuesday, Apr 28. More than 90,000 people flee from the terror hit NWFP in the past few months. The Taliban who earlier offered to disarm now moved their forces into neighbouring Dir and Buner about 100 km from federal capital triggering panic in Pakistan and heightening fears in the US about the stability of the nuclear-armed state.
