Meghalaya pig breeders told to follow strict hygiene to counter swine flu
Shillong (Meghalaya), May 3 (ANI): Pig breeders in Meghalaya have been warned to follow strict hygienic measures to counter the spread of swine flu, even as the State Government has said there is no case reported so far.
Apart from strict hygienic measures in the farms, the breeders have been told to provide a well-balanced feed to the animals, restrict movement of unwanted visitors, undertake de-worming exercises and control pests, rats, flies and disinfecting the surroundings.
The rearing of pigs is common in the state, and the government has asked veterinary doctors to keep a strict vigil on the health of the state's swine population, as pork is a staple diet.
Pig consumption in the state in 2007-08 was an estimated 0,074 tons. (ANI)
