Congress welcomes Supreme Court's order lifting stay on Gujarat riots trial
New Delhi, May 2 (ANI): The Congress Party has termed the Supreme Court's order lifting the stay on trial of Gujarat riots cases as "historic."
"This is one of the most historic orders of the Supreme Court. It gives a ray of hope to the victims of both the incidence at Godhra train as well as what happened after it. At last, the people of Gujarat and the people of the country are thankful to the court for continuing to live up to the expectations of the people," said Kapil Sibal, party's senior leader on Friday. eanwhile, the BJP termed the judgment as normal procedure of court to promote justice.
"This judgment only promotes and benefits the course of justice. Our party has already stated that it welcome the judgment," said senior BJP leader, Arun Jaitley.
On Friday, the apex court ordered a retrial of the Gujarat riots cases by fast track courts.
The apex court also directed that the trial would not be shifted out of Gujarat.
Besides, it also ordered the filing of additional chargesheets against new accused named by the Special Investigating Team (SIT).
On April 27, the apex court asked the SIT to probe the role of 64 people, including that of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, in the cases. (ANI)
