Baku: Gunman attacks academy, 13 dead, 11 injured

Baku, Apr 30: About 13 people were shot dead and 11 left injured when at least one gunman when on a shooting spree in the State Oil Academy in Azerbaijan's capital on Thursday, Apr 30 the country's health ministry said.

The security officials and the witnesses say that there was one attacker, who has been identified as a Georgian national. The media reports on the other hand speculate two to four attacker in the incident.

While the Chief paramedic Mursal Hamidov said that one attacker committed suicide; the government however did not confirm this. the police are not yet ready to reveal any information.

The attacker reportedly shot the security guard and cleaner after entering the academy and continued shooting at students and staff from a Makarov pistol while going up a staircase. The police allege that on reaching the sixth floor the attacker killed himself.

The Interior Ministry has said that the police will soon be releasing the details of the incident.

Different media reports have varying details of the event. The Guardian alleges that the attacker was a student who opened fire after a dispute with other members of his college faculty, quoting the Russian news agency Interfax.
