Colombo, Apr 20: A suicide bomber attacked the government-declared security zone in the northeast while the army was rescuing people held by Tamil Tiger rebels, killing at least 17 people on Monday, Apr 20.

The defence forces allege the involvement of the Liberation Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the suicide attack that took place in the No Fire Zone (NFZ) area at Puttumatalan. And the security forces accused LTTE of preventing the security forces from rescuing the civilians.

According to government figures at least, 120,000 people live in the area that the LTTE still controls. And at least 10,000 people were rescued on Monday, Apr 20 by troops in the NFZ near the port of Mullaitivu.
