Gunman shoots himself after killing 13 in New York

New York, Apr 4: A gunman killed at least 13 and took as many as 41 people hostage at New York immigrant counselling centre, and then apparently killed himself on Friday, Apr 3 morning.

The lone gunman who killed 13 people and then shot himself inside the New York civic association building has been identified as forty-two-year-old Jiverly Voong from upstate New York, media reports said.

The violence rocked the small university city of Binghamton, three hours from New York City. Gunman entered the American Civic Association building after blocking a rear exit, then with a high-powered rifle mowed down people assembled for English classes, citizenship counselling and other services for immigrants.

A law enforcement official said the body of the man believed to be the gunman was found in an office of the American Civic Association building.

The scene on the street outside the centre was one of controlled panic. Heavily armed local, county and state police were surrounding the building in Binghamton, a city of about 45,000 people, roughly three hours north-west of New York city, and an FBI hostage negotiation team was en route to the scene.
