Sweets in shape of various parties' symbols

Howrah (West Bengal), Apr 2 (ANI): A sweetshop in Howrah district of West Bengal is attracting hordes of customers with famous Bengali sweets made in the shape and colours of various political parties.

Famous Benagli sweet 'Sandesh' made in the shape of 'lotus', the symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party and 'hand' of Congress party are selling like hot cakes.

Rasgullas made in saffron and green colours symbolizing various political parties are also attracting hordes of customers to the 'Gandhesweri Sweet shop'.

"Sales in our shop have increased. Now, we sell at least 500-100 pieces of Rasgullas and Cham-Cham in a day. The 'Sandesh' is so much in demand that our workers get tired making it. They are not even able to eat food on time because of so much work," said Kesto Halder , a sweet shop owner.

At present, the shop is making about 100 small pieces with party symbols, each costing rupees 10 each. Ten to twelve big pieces party symbol sweets weighing about one kilogram are also flying off from the shelves regularly.

What catches the eye is the perfect colour given to each party symbol sweet - absolutely in keeping with party colours. Each sweet is almost a work of art, painstakingly created and coloured.

"I have never heard or seen 'Sandesh' made like party symbols. So I came here to see what types of 'Sandesh' these are. It is unbelievable. We have been seeing the ordinary type of sweets, but not like these, which depict party symbols. I liked them a lot and have purchased some," said Abhijit Chowdhury, a customer.

Sweets made of regional political parties of the Communist Part of India (Marxists) and the Trinamool Congress are also attracting lot of customers to the shop.

Polls are a time for heated exchanges between political leaders and supporters. However, for once, there is sweetness to the usually bitter election campaign in Bengal. By Ajitha Menon (ANI)
