Kasav's lawyer withdraws under pressure

Mumbai, Mar 31: Anjali Waghmare, Kasav's lawyer appointed by a special court, withdrew from the case on Monday, Mar 30 night.

Around 100 suspected Shiv Sena activists attacked Anjali Waghmare house on Monday, Mar 30 night. Shiv Sena members also pelted stones to her house at Worli.

She was unhurt in the attack and police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the mob. "People from this area have laid down their lives fighting terrorists and she despite hailing from this region has taken up defense case of Kasav. This infuriated people," said Ajay Chaudhari, member, Shiv Sena.

Waghmare under pressure gave her decision to withdraw from the case and not to represent Kasav. Waghmare said, "I was appointed by the Maharashtra government to represent Kasav. I can't accept the same and thereby withdraw from the case. I apologise for the same".

On March 23, Kasav, who had earlier sought consular access from Pakistan, had requested the court to provide a lawyer at the expense of the state, in the absence of a response from Islamabad.
