Air Deccan founder Gopinath to contest LS polls
Bangalore, Mar 26 (ANI): Low-cost carrier Air Deccan founder Captain G. R. Gopinath has opted to jump into the political fray in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He would contest as an independent candidate.opinath, however, will decide upon his constituency in Bangalore in next two days.
According to source, Gopinath will contest either from the Bangalore South or Bangalore Central constituency.
Gopinath floated India's first low-cost airline Air Deccan almost six years back. The airline went on to challenge the established oligopoly in the domestic aviation sector with unprecedented cheap fares.
In 2007, he sold the airline to Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher, but continues to be its Vice Chairman and the second largest individual shareholder.
Since then he has floated a few start-up ventures including a cargo airline under Deccan Express brand and hospitality projects.
Deccan Express is scheduled to start operations in the month of May with a fleet A310s. (ANI)
