Navin Chawla says zero tolerance on violations of model code of conduct

Chennai, Mar 12 (ANI): Election Commissioner Navin Chawla today said that there would zero tolerance on violations of the model code of conduct.

Speaking after a review meeting on the poll preparedness for the coming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, he said, "The commission would not tolerate any deviation in this. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure clean and transparent general elections."

Commending the state election authorities for doing a meticulous job, Chawla said over 97 percent achieved in photo identity cards and photo rolls in the state, is highest in the country.

He instructed the authorities to take steps to cover remaining three percent of population so that they are provided with some form of identification.

Chawla appealed to the electorate to check and ensure their names were there in the electoral rolls, while asking the candidates and political parties to abide by the model code of conduct and not to deface public walls and resort to graffiti on the walls of private premises.

Cautioning political parties on spending, he said income tax officials would be overseeing poll expenditure. (ANI)
