No more nurses from overseas: Obama

Washington, Mar 6: Some bad news for nurses who are nourishing the dream to fly to US. Reason: President Barack Obama opposed inviting overseas nurses, even from India, to fill up the acute shortage of nurses in US presently.

Like the most of the Western countries, United States is also facing huge shortfall of nurses and hence it had permitted nurses from India, China and Philippines to immigrate to work in hospitals.

Obama was of the opinion that the notion of importing nurses made absolutely no sense. He was speaking at at a gathering of health experts and lawmakers at a White House meeting on health care reforms. He insisted on training the people inside the country than inviting from foreign countries.

According Congress Woman Lois Capps, US will be lacking over 500,000 nurses in the next seven years.

Last week, a legislation was introduced in the US Congress to create a special category of nursing visas, which would facilitate much faster and easier bringing of trained nurses from Asian countries like India.
