Now urine can be used to charge batteries
London, Feb. 23 (ANI): Britain's Defense Ministry is considering the possibility of using the urine of the soldiers to power electrical gadgets during combat missions.
The liquid would trickle into a special battery that could be used to generate enough power for the essential kit like GPS machines and radios, The Sun reports.
This way, soldiers could carry more ammo instead of being loaded down with batteries.
The Ministry of Defence's Centre for Defence Enterprise at Harwell, Oxfordshire, is considering the proposal.
"Our task is to look for gadgets, technology and cutting-edge ideas to ensure troops have the latest battle-winning technology. By exploring technology like this, we can research ways of lightening their load," said Dr. Helen Almey, head of Defense Centre.
The process would require urine to be mixed with an acid compound to generate electricity. The method will also produce water clean enough to wash kit and vehicles.
One idea is to place the battery inside squaddies' combats.
The Defence Centre has awarded a contract to Southampton University to probe the production of energy using optical fibres, which could be woven into kit and produce a charge every time a soldier moves. (ANI)
