Guj: Hepatitis-B death toll rises to 40

Modasa (Gujarat), Feb 21: Seven more people have lost their lives due to the outbreak of Hepatitis-B in Modasa and 29 fresh cases are reported. With this the outbreak of Hepatitis-B in the Sabarkantha district of Gujarat have worsened. The death toll rose to 40.

Gujarat govt cracks down on doctors

Now the Gujarat govt has cracked down on doctors who have been accused of re-using infected needles. Health Department officials have also sealed 16 medical stores since Friday, Feb 21.

After the third day of the virulent hepatitis outbreak, the administration stepped in more aggressively, sealing 10 medicine shops in Modasa for selling recycled disposable syringes.

However, those battling with disease need more medical care. But a handful of doctors, shortage of beds are running out.

Gujarat Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas dismissed allegations that the medical infrastructure has not been able to deal with the outbreak.

"There is no question of medical infrastructure not matching up with requirement. Understand that it is a virus that spreads through blood. It has a window period of 90-180 days. Unless the disease surfaces it is not possible to know about it. Part of the viruses are mutated and that explains why there are large casualties," said Vyas.
