Centre suggests focussed approach to check mafia-terrorist nexus
New Delhi, Feb 18 (ANI): Keeping in view a possible nexus between the mafia and organized crime with terrorism, the Central Government has suggested that State Governments come up with action plans to counter it.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Dr. Shakeel Ahmad said: "The Central Government also focussed measures taken to identify and rid State capitals and other major cities/towns of mafia gangs, extortion groups, and land sharks."
"The State Governments have also been advised to set up a dedicated and well equipped cell, under senior level supervision, to comprehensively monitor and deal with organized crimes such as, drug trafficking, money laundering, and circulation of counterfeit currency," he added
However, police and public order being State subjects under the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution, the State Governments are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crime and criminals. (ANI)
