'We have no regrets masterminding 9/11'
Cuba, Jan 20: Two alleged masterminds of September 11, 2001 attacks were unapologetic about their roles in the World Trade Center attacks. They declared their guilt on Monday, Jan 19 in the perhaps final session of the Guantanamo war crimes court.
Ramzi Binalshibh and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed are the self-proclaimed architect of the terrorist attacks. The two said they dont have any regrets for their role. "We did what we did; we're proud of September 11," said Binalshibh. He told he wants to plead guilty to charges that could put him to death.
"We don't care about capital punishment," said Mohammed. "We are doing jihad for the cause of God." Representing himself Mohammed insisted to remove the lawyer assigned to him from his defense table, saying he represents "people who tortured me."
In a verbal attack over secrecy, terrorist ridiculed the govt's national security. "They want to hide their black sites, their torture techniques," he said. Kith and kins of three people killed in Sept 11 attacks attended the court hearings. They hope that Obama does not halt the war crimes trials.
"If they're guilty ... then let's give them the death penalty that they deserve," said Jim Riches of Brooklyn, NY whose 29-year-old firefighter son, Jimmy, was killed at the World Trade Center. "It would be nice to know the people who planned this, who killed my son and all the other people, are being held accountable." he added.
Mohammed confessed that he played a central role in about 30 terrorist plots around the world.
