No drunken driving in Mumbai on new year eve

Mumbai, Dec 27: Its been a month since the gruesome terror attack shocked India's financial hub. But the Mumbaikers are not ready to give up so is the Mumbai police. This time for New Year celebrations, the police will maintain a much more tighter vigil on the city streets. Strict action will be taken against drunken driving.

This initiative from the police authorities has come as a blessing in disguise for the cab services in Mumbai. Many people have decided to take a cab after the new year party and go home safely. Sources say that many of the key restaurants too are hiring own drivers to provide safe night drive facility to their guests.

Mumbaikers have pledged to stop 'drink & drive' in response to the traffic police campaign to clampdown the menace of drunken driving. In 2007 the police have nabbed 334 drunk
drivers on New Year'eve alone and have jailed over 11,000 drunk drivers through the year.

The police promise that this time round they will only be stricter. Harish Baijal, the DCP of Mumbai Traffic Police said, "We have more breath analysers, more manpower more checking this year."
