Dunlop closes its Sahagunj unit for indefinite period
Hooghly, Nov 30 (UNI) Tyre production factory Dunlop India Ltd today declared suspension of work for indefinite period at its Sahaganj plant, rendering at least 1,200 workers jobless.
The management resorted to the extreme step citing problems with the labour union leaders, a company release said.
''We were faced with crippling problems to keep the production going. We had decided to suspend production temorarily and pay the workers a solatium of Rs 2,000. But the workers refused to oblige.
We would try to resume production, once the unions and management arrive at a consensus over the pending issues,'' Pawan K Ruja, Chairman of Dunlop India Ltd, claimed.
Meanwhile, the unemployed workers resorted to agitation and raised a blockade on Grand Trunk road.
Police forces had been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident and pacify the workers to lift the blockade.
