Ranbir Singh celebrates his 95th birthday

Rohtak, Nov 26 (UNI) Mr Ranbir Singh, the only surviving member of the Constituent Assembly of India, celebrated his 95th birthday here today.

Father of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ch Ranbir Singh wished the people of the state prosperity on the occasion.

Ch Ranbir Singh had served the Constituent Assembly, Constituent Legislative Assembly, Provisional Parliament, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and assemblies of Punjab and Haryana and was imprisoned several times.

He went to eight different jails, four of these are now in Pakistan and another four in India.

Blessing his son, who greeted him on his birthday, Ch Ranbir Singh advised the Chief Minister to continue to follow traditions of his family and the Congress Party to serve the state and the society.

He recalled the historic moment of dedication of the Bhakra Nangal Dam to the people by late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Nangal when he was Irrigation and Power Minister of Punjab.

Mr Hooda assured his father of the commitment of the State Government to realise dreams of the people of Haryana. He told his father that with his blessings he would soon succeed in bringing Bhakra waters to the fields of Haryana through Hansi-Butana Link Canal.

Mr Hooda said that he was proud of his father who had not only strived hard for the welfare of masses, but also went to jails several times and suffered miseries.

Describing his father as a man of Gandhian philosophy, Mr Hooda said that this was the reason that he was a non-smoker. He narrated how his father was instrumental in his giving up smoking.
