Pondy revenue officials seize huge quantity of sand

Puducherry, Nov 25 (UNI) In a bid to check illegal sand quarrying from the Sankarabharani river at Sellippattu, the revenue officials today conducted a raid and seized a huge quantity of sand.

According to official sources, the administration had already imposed a ban on sand quarrying from the river by private parties.

However, the people of Sellippattu used to collect sand from the river during night and store it in the backyard of their houses.

On a tip-off, a team of revenue officials, led by Deputy Collector Franklin, conducted raid in the village and seized huge quantities of sand from almost all the houses.

A portion of the sand seized, was used to fill up the gutters on the roads in the village and the rest was brought to the town and sold through the government corporations.

A strong warning was issued to the villagers, the sources added.
