3 cops suspended for assaulting 70-yr-old man
Sangli, Nov 24 (UNI) Three policemen were suspended by District Superintendent of police for assaulting a 70-year-old man, causing his death.
Head constable N Y Mujawar, constables Tanaji Patil and R J Kulkarni of Shirala tehsil police station were suspended last night, after the death of Narayan Bandhu Patil, whom they allegedly beat on November 18, after he intervened in the interrogation of his nephew Dagdu Ramchandran Patil (32), detained in a theft case, police said today.
Narayan, a resident of Gude-Pachgani tehsil, had lost his mental balance and given up food after the incident, following which he died on Saturday last, his family said. However, the death had caused a stir in the village, as the villagers demanded action against the cops, by not cremating Narayan's body. The last rites were performed only last night after the policemen were suspended.
