Security tightened in North Bengal to prevent Maoist upsurge
Siliguri, Nov 23 (UNI) With the Adivasi movement in Lalgarh and the alleged ivolvement of Maoists in trigerring unrest in the region, the police is leaving no stone unturned to step up security amid reports of a similar struggle brewing in North Bengal.
''The police department has been alerted to keep tabs on any Maoist uprising in North Bengal, especially in the Adivasi-dominated areas,'' Surendra Kumar Gupta, District Magistrate, Darjeeling, said.
However, Saroj Kumar Ghosh, general secretary of Bandi Mukti Committee, allegedly a Maoist outfit having its network all over West Bengal, alleged that police was harassing people unnecessarily, suspecting them to be Maoists.
''We are against this and will not hesitate to launch a movement similar to that in Lalgarh to curb this menace, if it continues,'' he said.
