Journalists continue stir, stay away from work
Imphal, Nov 21 (UNI) For the second day today Manipur went without newspapers owing to a stir by journalists against the alleged killing of a junior scribe earlier.
The local cable television also stopped broadcasting for the third day today.
Journalists continued a sit-in protest for the third consecutive day to protest the killing of Konsam Rishikanta(23), junior Sub-Editor of 'The Imphal Free Press' on November 17.
The fraternity had decided to stay away from duty, considering the 'threat' to their lives from various quarters. A day-long meeting was held today at the Press Club. No organisation has yet come forward to claim responsibility for the killing.
Agitating scribes, under the aegis of All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), have decided to inform Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and various other media organisations about the matter.
Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh assured compensation to the victim's family and a suitable job to the survivors.
The AMWJU also demanded that the government award compensation to the bereaved family as per the Centre's scheme for victims of terrorist violence.
The AMWJU said it would continue the stir until the perpetrators were identified and proper action was taken by the government.
Sit-in protests were organised at several parts of the city, UNI NS DBY PL KLC1732
