Caste-based census ''unwarranted'': Lok Satta
Hyderabad, Nov 21 (UNI) Describing as ''unwarranted'' the caste-based Census, the Lok Satta party today said the enumeration should consider people's poverty and backwardness and not their caste.
Party spokesperson Katari Srinivasa Rao and Working Committee member Lakshman Balaji pointed out that Mr Barack Obama won American presidentship by transcending race.
''One comes to power by earning the support of the majority of people and it has little to do with the castes of supporters. None can prevent leaders, claiming to enjoy the support of a caste with the largest populations, from coming to power. There is no need to spark a caste war for this,'' they said, reacting to speeches made by various political leaders at a seminar on ''OBC enumerations and social justice' here yesterday.
''Politics should aim at harmonising interests of different conflicting castes and classes and providing opportunities for every child, irrespective of its caste or religion, to grow,'' they said in a press release here.
