Over three hundred university students stage dharna

Mumbai, Nov 20 (UNI) Over 300 students today staged a dharna at Azad Maidan to protest the encroachment on Mumbai University land, measuring around nine acres at Kalina campus.

Subhash Arun Athavale, senate member of the university, said here that over 650 huts and a five star hotel were illegally constructed on Mumbai University land at Kalina campus in western suburbs.

Elaborating, he said the Bombay high court has already given directive to evacuate all the tenants from campus land and hand it over to Mumbai Univerity.

But, collector has sought time twice for demolition of the huts and illegal structures were constructed on the University land.

The high court has given deadline till December 31, 2008 for evacuation of the tenants.

At the entrance of the campus, several hotels and shops were also being constructed due to the inactivity of the authorities, he added.
