Journalists stop working to protest killing of scribe

Imphal, Nov 19 (UNI) The journalists in Manipur staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat here today to protest the killing of a young journalist Konsam Rishikanta by unknown people on November 17.

All Manipur Working Journalist Union president, S Hemant, editors of all newspapers and scribes took part in the protest.

They also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister, Ibobi Singh yesterday.

The Chief Minister assured justice, compensation and a suitable job to the family members.

The journalist union would also apprise the matter to the Press Council of India and the Indian Federation of Working Journalists.

Information Minister TN Haokip also assured to provide all assistance to nab the perpetrators.

N Biren, Minister Youth Affairs and Sports, Bijoy Koijam MLA also came to meet the journalists.

The decision to stop work was taken in an emergency body meeting held yesterday here at Press Club.

During the sit-in protest the journalists demanded judicial probe to find the culprit.

The Union also demanded to take necessary measures for the protection of working journalists of the state as they were not able to work freely due to intense pressure from various unlawful organisations.
