Former Meghalaya CM D D Pugh laid to rest

Shillong, Nov 19 (UNI) Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Darwin Diengdoh Pugh was laid to rest today in a simple funeral service here.

Thousands of mourners were present at the residence of Mr Pugh amidst tearful adieu.

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Bindo M Lanong, Deputy Chief Minister Timothy D Shira, Higher and Technical Education Minister Manas Chaudhuri were among the prominent leaders, who attended the funeral rites.

Mr Pugh was sworn in as Meghalaya Chief Minister on March 10, 1978 of the APHLC-led Meghalaya United Legislative Party government with the support of two regional parties, the Public Demand Implementation Committee (PDIC) and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Independents.

Perhaps, Mr Pugh was the only leader, who assumed the Chief Minister's office through a draw of lots, which was the method used to settle the disputed post among the coalition partners.
