Failure to provide maintenance lands man in jail

Imphal, Nov 16 (UNI) The Family Court, Manipur, has remanded one Khundrakpam Sanahongba Singh of Sagoltongba Makha Leikai, Imphal West district, to judicial custody for his failure to pay monthly maintenance to his wife and children.

According to case dossier, Khundrakpam Ongbi Moirangthem Ningol Ithoi Devi of Naoremthong Shamushang Uku, Imphal West district, had filed a case for claiming monthly maintenance from her husband Khundrakpam Sanahongba Singh in 2006.

The case was disposed of on November 30, 2006 by the Family Court, Manipur, thereby directing Khundrakpam Sanahongba Singh to pay monthly maintenance allowance of Rs 900 to his wife for herself and her two minor children.

However, the husband did not comply with the said order of the court and did not pay anything to his wife.

Consequently, the wife approached the Family Court, Manipur, again by filing a case for execution of the order dated November 30, 2006.

The husband did not respond to the showcause notice issued by the Court. Thereafter, the Family Court issued a warrant of arrest to the Officer-in-Charge, Patsoi Police Station.

In compliance with the warrant of arrest issued, Khundrakpam Sanahongba Singh was arrested and produced before the Court yesterday.

Thereafter, he was remanded to the judicial custody till November 29, this year for his failure to pay maintenance allowance to his wife.

The case was filed at the active initiative of Human Rights Law Network (Manipur).
