Education a major tool for women empowerment: President
New Delhi, Nov 16 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today became nostalgic when reminded about her strong views in defence of women empowerment through education over four decades back.
"Thank you for reminding me of the good times when I was a minister in Maharashtra and had a dinner with you at your home," the President said, pointing to INS chief and PCI member H N Cama at the inaugural session of the National Press day celebrations organised by the Press Council of India(PCI).
At the very outset of her address, Mrs Patil chose to thank Mr Cama for pointing out to the President as to how strongly she made a case for allowing her sister to go out of Bombay to study medicine.
Mr Cama recalled how in 1965-66 when his father was reluctant to send his sister out of town, Mrs Patil, then a minister in Maharashtra government, persuaded him to allow her to seek education outside Bombay.
The President was quoted having said at that time that women have to work hard twice as compared to men.
