Paswan for 10% import duty on steel, decision within a week

Noida, Nov 14 (UNI) Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan seeks to impose a 10 per cent import duty on steel products and expects the Finance Ministry to take a decision within a week.

''The government will soon take steps on imposing import tax.

I have written to the Finance Ministry and it may take a decision within a week. I have written for 10 per cent import duty,'' the Minister told reporters on the sidelines of a function.

At present, steel imports are not taxed in the country.

Regarding the steel manufacturers cutting production due to falling demand, he said he is not aware of any such plans.

''There is no proposal to cut production. No company has indicated that to me,'' he said.
