Jairam Ramesh announces new coal plant for AP

Hyderabad, Nov 14 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh today announced setting up of a 600 MW coal-based power plant in Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh.

Work on the project using coal from Singareni Collieries would commence in coming January next year and commissioned in 2012, he told newspersons here after a meeting with Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

During the meeting, Mr Jairam assured Dr Reddy to review the progress of other power projects with the APGENCO and Union Power Ministry officials. The Centre would help Andhra Pradesh whenever required, he assured.

''When the power projects in the pipeline gets completed in next ten years, Andhra Pradesh generation capacity will go up from the present mere 7000 MW to 75,000 MW,'' he noted.

The new projects, included a 2000 MW nuclear power plant, a joint venture between the Nuclear Power Corporation and the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation (GENCO), at Kadapa. Andhra Pradesh would be a major producer of Uranium through the Nalgonda project, he added.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had approved a special grant of Rs 300 crore for 1,282 MW power project using integrated Coal gasification technology proposed by GENCO in collaboration with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

Andhra Pradesh was the first state to go in for two units of 800 MW each thermal power plant using ''super critical technology'' in Krishnapatnam, he added.
