Govt should act swiftly on imposing import duty on steel: SAIL
Noida, Nov 13 (UNI) Steel Authority of India (SAIL), the country's largest steel producer, today urged the government to impose import duty on all categories of steel to ward off the threat of cheaper imports from China.
''As China may try to dump the commodity in the Indian market, the government should act swiftly on imposing import duty on steel,'' SAIL Chairman S K Roongta told reporters here.
Regarding the SAIL's expansion plan, Mr Roongta said the company's plans will not be hit despite the demand for the commodity nosediving globally due to the financial recession.
However, he said the production will be ''demand-oriented'', adding that it is right time for the industry players and government to come forward.
