Traders stage agitation against introduction of cess duty
Kolhapur, Nov 10 (UNI) Traders are in a agitation mode since November one against introduction of cess duty in 'D' category municipal corporations in Maharashtra.
The state government had abolished octroi duty of 'D' category municipal corporations and replaced it with cess duty from November one, following reports of adverse effect on jaggery-producing farmers.
As a result, the jaggery-producing farmers had started bringing their produce in the Kolhapur Zilla Agriculture Products Market by paying cess duty, market sources said here today.
As per government's policy, traders have to pay cess on jaggery.
They can recover it from jaggery-producing farmers, they added.
The protesting traders said they were facing huge losses due to introduction of cess duty.
