Intelligence warns of terror attacks in Shillong
Shillong, Nov 10 (UNI) After the Assam serial blasts, intelligence agencies have warned the Meghalaya government that Shillong could be the next target.
''The intelligence agencies have alerted the Meghalaya government of the possibility of an attack in Shillong, Silchar and Siliguri and we are taking the alert very seriously,'' former Lok Sabha Speaker and Meghalaya State Planning Board (SPB) Chairman Purno A Sangma told reporters here today.
Mr Sangma confirmed the intelligence agencies' report of the possibility of terror attacks in Shillong, Silchar and Siliguri.
He informed that the Meghalaya government had innumerable security meetings to review its security arrangement in view of the threat from terrorists' organisations.
''Security agencies have stepped up intelligence network and security has been tightened in Shillong,'' he affirmed.
Earlier, the intelligence agencies had identified four places each in Shillong and Garo Hills and three in Jaintia Hills as most vulnerable to terror attack. In Shillong, three busiest markets-- Police Bazaar, Iewduh and Laitumkhrah Bazaar--and Laban locality have been identified as the most likely places of such attack.
In Garo Hills, Resubelpara, Tikkrikilla, Tura and Bajengdoba have been identified as places that are likely targets of terrorists. In Jaintia Hills, Jowai, Ladrymbai and Khliehriat are said to be vulnerable places to attacks.
