Car sales fall 6.6% in Oct, bike sales fall 18.17%

New Delhi, Nov 10 (UNI) Car sales in the domestic market stood at 98,900 units in October versus 1,05,877 units in the same month last year registering a fall of 6.59 per cent, according to data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The economic slump and the ensuing reduction in consumer spending continued to take its toll on domestic sales of automobiles in October, data released by the industry showed today.

''Car sales in the domestic market stood at 98,900 units in October versus 105,877 units in the same month last year, this reflects a fall of 6.59 per cent,'' the auto body said in a statement.

According to the figures released by the SIAM, motorcycle sales in the country during the month was down by 18.17 per cent at 5,38,353 units, against 6,57,874 units in the corresponding month, a year ago.

Meanwhile, sales of commercial vehicles (trucks and buses) stood at 28,027 units in October as against 43,756 units sold in the corresponding month a year earlier, the SIAM data revealed.

This represents a drop of about 36 per cent.

Two-wheeler sales declined to 6,78,245 units in October from 7,93,420 units in October 2007, translating into a fall of 14.5 per cent.
