PDP condemns recurrent curbs on media in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 8 (UNI) Condemning the official curbs on media in the Kashmir valley, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said such unwarranted actions could prove counter-productive.

In a statement issued here today, a PDP spokesman said the undemocratic actions like stopping telecast of local cable channels, issuing warnings to the print media and restricting the circulation of newspapers are only heard of in war-like situation.

''Operation of such tactics against the media in the prevailing scenario in the state is only going to vitiate further the already charged atmosphere,'' he said.

The spokesman said restricting circulation of newspapers in the age of internet could be only seen as a foolhardy step.

He said the media should be allowed to work in a free, and fearless manner and it should be left to the people's judgment to decide what is right or wrong.

He urged the Governor N N Vohra and the Chief Election Commissioner (ECI) to ensure that the unsavory practice of imposing restrictions on the local media is done away forthwith.
