Obama won because he had 'broad-based support of all racial backgrounds'

Lahore, Nov 8 : African-American Democrat Barack Obama won the Nov 4 presidential poll because the White votes outnumbered non-White votes and in the end, the scope of Obama's victory showed that he enjoyed significant, broad-based support from Americans of all racial backgrounds," the Daily Times quoted an article published on the blog Asian-Nation as saying.

The article further stated that 52 percent of voters earning at least 200,000 dollars per annum voted for Obama as opposed to 46 percent who voted for his rival Republican candidate John McCain.

It also noted that Obama captured almost all of the African-American votes and a huge percentage of the Latino and Asian-American votes.

The paper also quoted another article appearing in the Financial Times, which said that another reason for his win was the tendency of lower-income voters to ignore their economic self-interest, as championed by Democrats, in favour of their cultural agenda, as articulated by Republicans.

"Obama won a majority among high-income voters whose taxes he has said he would raise," said the FT article.
