Work on new project to be over by 2010: Velu

Karur, Tamil Nadu, Nov 7 (UNI) The construction of the bridge across the River Cauvery, linking Mohanur in Namakkal District with Vangal in Karur District as part of the Salem-Karur Railway Line Project, is likely to be completed by the end of 2010, according to Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu.

Addressing the press here yesterday after inspecting the work on the new Railway line, Mr Velu said he had asked the officials to expedite the work.

He said work on the project was progressing steadily despite facing difficulties in a few areas.

The estimate for the project, which was sanctioned in 1996-97 for 85 kms of new broad gauge line between Salem and Karur, was revised upwards to Rs 615 crore due to increase in prices of various materials.

But funds were not a problem, he said adding that the Railways had sanctioned 108 bridges for Tamil Nadu.
