Judgement of OBC quota in Tripura NIT deferred
Agartala, Nov 7 (UNI) The Agartala bench of Gauhati High Court has deferred the judgement to facilitate OBC quota in Tripura National Institute of Technology till November 18 due to non-availability of the apex court's directive on the issue.
The court yesterday asked to submit the copy of the Supreme Court's directive ordering mid-term admission against vacant seats in educational institutions to fill up 5,000 seats in higher educational institutions across the country this year.
Making the observation on a writ petition filed by D R Nath, secretary of the Nath Kalyan Samity in July, challenging the non-implementation of OBC quota in Tripura NIT, Justices B P Kataki and M B K Singh said an order in favour of reservation could be passed only if the petitioners submitted a copy of the apex court's directive.
The Union Human Resource Ministry has called a special meeting of all Central higher education institutions on November 10 to prepare a roadmap for filling the vacant seats, official sources here today said.
The fresh admissions for the academic session 2008-09 could throw open nearly 5,000 seats currently lying vacant in colleges and universities funded by the Centre.
The trouble over implementing OBC quota in Tripura NIT started because the ruling Left Front government wanted to implement its own brand of reservation, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Ratan Lal Nath alleged.
