BJP Mahila Morcha dharna for 33% seats to women in Del assy poll
New Delhi, Nov 5 (UNI) Protesting against lack of adequate representation to women in selection of candidates for polls to the Delhi Legislative Assembly, the BJP Mahila Morcha today carried out a dharna at the party state office.
The BJP Mahila Morcha, led by its president Vishakha Sailani gheraoed the Delhi BJP office here to protest lack of 33 per cent representation to women in alloting tickets for the November 29 Assembly polls.
The first list of candidates for 53 Assembly seats released by the BJP on Saturday contains names of just two women - Ms Anita Arya from Patel Nagar and Ms Kalpana Jain from Gandhi Nagar.
Shouting slogans against the senior leadership of the party, the morcha activists blocked the car of Delhi BJP chief Harshvardhan for several minutes in protest.
Despite BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley's assurance on Saturday that women would be given greater representation in the remaining 13 seats of the state assembly, candidature for which was yet to be made public, morcha activists feel let down by the woefully low representation of women in the already released list of 53 candidates.
''On the one hand the party claims to support the proposal of 33 per cent representation to women in Parliament and state legislatures, while on the other it is not willing to give opportunity to women to contest that many seats,'' Ms Sailani said.
