LS urges Govt to generate employment for teachers

Hyderabad, Nov 3 (UNI) Hailing the Andhra Pradesh Government for inviting representatives of Joint Action Committee of Teachers' Organisation (JACTO) for talks, Lok Satta President, Jayaprakash Narayan today said the Government should immediately appoint 100,000 teachers and a Supervisor for every ten teachers.

Dr Narayan, who had convened an emergency session of the party's State Working Committee meeting to discuss the crisis in education following the teachers' indefinite strike, said, ''the Government has merely administered a symptomatic palliative and succeeded in ending the teachers' strike, but not attempted to root out the systemic cancer plaguing the education sector.'' He said the Government should treat teachers as key players in education and not as mercenaries. It should put an end to bonded slavery by teachers in the name of apprenticeship and pay them full wages, he added.

The party supremo said the Government should recognise education from pre-school to Class-12 as a fundamental right and desist from entrusting teachers with responsibilities unrelated to teaching, he said.

The party urged the setting up of infrastructure facilities equally for private and government schools by focusing on English and Computer as part of the curriculum.
