Singur, Nov 2: More than 500 activists of the 'Nano Bachao Committee' on Sunday, Nov 2 raised a blockade near Ratanpur crossing on National Highway two to prevent the entry of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who is scheduled to address a public rally.

Traffic movement on both the flanks of Durgapur Expressway remained disrupted since this morning as the protestors raised black flags and brandished placards saying 'Go Back Mamata'. Ms Banerjee is scheduled to address a public rally later this evening at Khaserchowk Belatala on NH 2, about one km from Ratanpur crossing. Her convoy would arrive at the rally site through the highway. However, the activists of 'Nano Bachao Committee' had vowed not to allow Ms Banerjee to enter Singur.

Meanwhile, huge contingent of security forces and senior police officials, including the Srerampore SDPO and Chandannagore SDPO Amitava Maity, had rushed to the spot to maintain law and order.

''We are holding discussions with the agitators and trying to lift the blockade as soon as possible. We are also keeping strict vigil so that there is no violation of law and order,'' the Chandannagore SDPO said.

No untoward incident or violence had been reported from the area so far, although tension prevailed.
