KMC meeting witnesses noisy scenes over property tax hike

Kolhapur, Oct 31 (UNI) The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC)-convened special general body meeting today to discuss KMC's proposal for hike in property tax witnessed noisy scenes.

Majority of KMC corporators, both ruling and opposition, strongly opposed the hike proposal and demanded its withdrawal.

Finally, Kolhapur Mayor Uday Salokhe, who presided over the meeting, declared that the property tax will be collected as per present rate and put aside the hike proposal.

While announcing this, Mr Salokhe stated that the administration should revaluate the citizens property. However, KMC standing committee chairman Sunil Modi demanded that the property re-check should be confined to some objectionable properties and not the total city, which opposed by majority of the corporators and led to noisy scenes again.

KMC, in it's second general body meeting later, approved proposal for Subkar (sub-tax) instead of octroi collection as per government decision from midnight.

Despite traders opposition to sub-tax on goods entry, KMC meeting approved sub-tax proposal.

AS many as 27 KMC octroi points will be closed with effect from november 1, 2008, and the sub-tax will be calculated on goods price as per government norms.
