Classical status puts Kannada in high pedestal: Yeddyurappa

Bangalore, Oct 31 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said the centre according classical status to Kannada has placed the language on a high pedestal.

Thanking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on behalf of the people of Karnataka he said that the 53nd Rajyotsava, the State formation day tomorrow would be celebrated as 'Vijayotsava' following the Kannada getting the classical tag after many years of lobbying for it.

KPCC President R V Deshpande said that Kannada is a rich language and its antiquity dates back to more than 2000 years and richly deserved it.

Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Mallikarjun Kharge also joined in thanking the UPA government and Prime Minister Singh and Congress high command Sonia Gandhi for extending the classical status to Kannada.
