CIAL installs UPS for runway lighting at Airport
Kochi, Oct 31 (UNI) An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system for runway lighting has been installed at the Nedumbaserry International Airport, near here, to eliminate any disruption in flight landings due to power failure.
In case of a power breakdown, the runway lighting will be catered to by the UPS System immediately without any interruption while the power supply was being connected to the airport generator, Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) officials said.
With the installation of this system recently at a cost of Rs 45 lakh, disruption of flight landings due to power failure would be eliminated. This would be more effective during rainy and lightning conditions.
The system was introduced as part of the CIAL's efforts to augment the safety systems at the Nedumbaserry Airport, the officials added.
The runway lighting system at the airport is of Category-1 type.
A standby generator of sufficient capacity was provided with automatic facility to transfer power to the system, in case of any power disruption in the KSEB line.
As per the standards laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the change-over time for Category-1 type is maximum 15 seconds.
At the Nedumbaserry Airport, the generator will supply power within eight to nine seconds. However, when an aircraft was landing in night hours or in low visibility conditions, the change- over time of even eight to nine seconds was very critical and in order to overcome this, the UPS was installed, the officials said.
