Mayawati asks Centre to stop attacks on north Indians in Mumbai
Lucknow, Oct 29 : In the wake of killing of a youth hailing from Uttar Pradesh in Mumbai, State Chief Minister Mayawati has asked the Centre and Maharashtra Government to take immediate action to stop attacks on north Indians.
"The Centre and Maharashtra government should initiate immediate measures to check attack on north Indians in Maharashtra," Mayawati said in a letter shot off to the union government and Maharashtra chief minister.
Mayawati said that both the Centre and the Maharashtra government have failed to check such "unconstitutional acts".
Mayawati also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. two lakhs for the kin of the victim, Dharam Dev Rai who was beaten to death on a train in Badlapur in Maharashtra, after the miscreants identified him as a "North Indian".
Rai, 25, and his three friends were attacked by eight-ten people when they were on their way to Kurla.
One of them claimed that they were attacked by a group of Marathi-speaking youth who abused them for taking up jobs in Mumbai.
The tragic incident comes after a youth from Bihar Rahul Raj was gunned down by the Mumbai Police on Monday after he had allegedly hijacked a bus at Kurla saying he wanted to take revenge against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.
