Central team inspects proposed site for IIM

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 27 (UNI) A Central team has inspected three possible locations in and around Tiruchirapalli city recently, to house the proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) here, official sources revealed.

The sources said Tamil Nadu Government's Higher Education Secretary K Ganesan and Tiruchirapalli District Collector T Soundiah accompanied the team that comprised two officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, including Sunil Kumar, Joint Secretary and Sekhar Choudhuri, Director, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta.

The team inspected a 200 acre site in the Bharatidasan University campus and another at Panchapur and Sethurapatti near here.

The team, however, preferred to set up the IIM in the university campus, the sources added.

After providing over 300 acres to the newly created Anna University-Tiruchi, Bharatidasan University has 650 acres of land left. As per the sketch with the district administration, the frontage for IIM here will be located in the space between the University and the Anna University. The state government was keen on getting the IIM started at the earliest. There are also indications the IIM would start functioning from the next academic year, the sources added.
