NCP activists pay Rs 20,000 fine for VHP office damage

Nashik, Oct 26 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) activists paid a fine of Rs 20,000 as compensation for attack on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) office here today.

According to sources, NCP leader Ranjan Thakre and some activists had attacked the VHP office here yesterday and damaged it. Following it, Thakre and four others were arrested. A case of riot and damage to public property was registered against them. As per the recent ordinance passed by the Maharashtra government, a fine of Rs 20,000 was taken as compensation for the damage to the VHP office from them.

Interestingly, the ordinance was passed by the Congress-NCP Democratic Front government, following the recent attacks by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists on north Indians. The ordinance has a provision to take compensation from the agitators for the damage done by them. The NCP itself became the first party to pay such compensation in the state.

The five arrested were produced before a local court which remanded them in police custody till October 27.

VHP state unit president Shankar Gaykar informed in a press meet that the VHP will receive the compensation amount tomorrow.
