12 injured as security force burst teargas in Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 24 (UNI) About a dozen people were injured when security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators, protesting against dumping of city garbage at Achan, Saidpora, in the city outskirts.

Residents at Achan Saidpora took to the streets this morning when dozens of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) vehicles, with city garbage reached there.

However, when the residents refused to allow the vehicles to dump the garbage there, security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathichage.

The agitated residents pelted stones, official sources said, adding about a dozen people were injured in the incident.

The summer capital, Srinagar, was turned into a garbage dump with hundreds of tonnes of plastic and other waste material scattered almost everywhere.

Hundreds of tonnes of waste, collected by the sweepers, remained on roads for the past one week as the Achen residents refused to allow the SMC to dump the city garbage there.

Despite repeated assurance by the SMC and other civil authorities on shifting the dumping site, nothing has been done so far.
