Centre nod for fishing harbour in TN

Chennai, Oct 22 (UNI) The Centre has approved the construction of a fishing harbour at Thengaipatinam in Kanniyakumari District at a cost of Rs 40 crore under the Centrally-sponsored scheme.

This fulfilled the long-standing demand of the fishermen of the Kanniyakumari District, an official release here today said.

The fishing harbour would be a model fishing harbour to be constructed with two berthing facilities and auction halls, net mending sheds, gear sheds and other facilities with the Hazard Analysis Critical Central Point required for export, it said.

The harbour would provide employment to about 10,000 people, onboard fishing vessels and 1000 persons for onshore based activities.

It would also help earn foreign exchange to the tune of about Rs 50 crore annually, the release claimed.
