Somnath urges for more enhanced role for India in Commonwealth

New Delhi, Oct 20 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today urged for an enhanced role for India in the Commonwealth in strengthening democracy.

Interacting with Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma here, Mr Chatterjee said Anglo-Saxon tradition and English Common Law (ECL) were the bedrock of the Commonwealth fraternity and the Commonwealth should address the needs of its member countries, particularly the small countries.

Responding to the suggestions, Mr Sharma said there could be a structured programme for the Commonwealth by the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST) in the context of the 60th year of the Modern Commonwealth next year.

Mr Chatterjee said the BPST of the Lok Sabha Secretariat can play an important role in capacity building among stakeholders in success of democracy in the Commonwealth.
